CrossLab, the big idea....

Laboratories play a key role in a wide range of STEM courses. As part of the project, we have the opportunity to see beyond our own horizons and launch a calls to support new innovative laboratory ideas at the partner universities. Furthermore, the ideas from students and lecturers are and were of equal interest.

Here is an overview of the developments....

Digital strawberries: ‘’Connected smart hydroponic system‘’ as a cross-reality lab

‘Take care of your strawberries at the click of a mouse’ – nevertheless, harvesting them is still a manual process.

...and learn how sensors and actuators work, how to record sensor data autonomously via radio signals, visualize it online and analyze the data.

Making the system soil-water-atmosphere-plant tangible

The system soil-water-atmosphere-plant is of central importance in geoecological education. At the same time it is inherently characterised by complex interacting, non-linear processes. In many cases, the complexity and the abstract situation of limited observability hinder an approach to the subject. Furthermore, processes such as infiltration, water redistribution,...

Digitization of extensions for ball drop test and train models

As part of the CrossLab project, the Department of Systems and Software Engineering is proposing the further development of the two existing laboratories ‘Ball drop test’ and ‘ Train model’. Both labs are currently used for courses and other student work. The department is already planning to modernize and expand the falling ball experiment in the coming years and therefore has the higher priority.

Expansion of remote service station and development of digital twin

Up until now, students have had to operate the system, for example, to remove the cups filled with water and empty them back into the storage tank. Empty cups also need to be placed at the start of the conveyor belt.

For remote operation, the system would need to be extended to work fully automatically and continuously without the need for....

Practical course "Temperature measurement technology"

Accurate measurement of temperature plays a major role not only in weather observation, but in many technical fields - temperature is the most measured quantity after time.

Temperature cannot be measured directly, but only by its effect on another physical quantity. In industry, mainly electrical thermometers (resistance thermometers and thermocouples) are used for this measurement. The thermometer can only measure the temperature that it has itself assumed...

Remote LaserLab

Laboratory work with various components such as lasers, lenses and camera chips is an essential part of optics education. The construction of simple optical systems, e.g. to determine the quality of a laser beam profile or to analyze the light distribution behind different beam shapers, is very important in order to link the ideal representations from textbooks with reality. By working in the lab, ...

Speed-control and monitoring in electrical Systems (SpeCoMoS)

In the age of Industry 4.0, I would like to teach students how to use the technology of the Industrial Internet of Things like a smart factory. In cooperation with the TU Ilmenau, a remote lab will be designed and set up in such way that:

  • the rotational speed of an electric motor can be recorded,
  • the analog to digital converted data can be processed and
  • the rotational speed can be regulated via pulsed operation in a closed loop.

Augmented Reality Laboratory – airfoil in wind tunnel

In the context of the lectures Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Machinery I, a laboratory is to be developed which enables students to independently investigate the interactions between flow and airfoil in the wind tunnel. On the one hand, the laboratory should offer the possibility to collect real measurement data (pressure distribution on the airfoil, resulting lifting and drag forces). On the other hand, the flow...
