Development of a digital laboratory in Organic Chemistry

The practical courses in organic chemistry focus on acquiring basic technical knowledge and skills. Students are instructed to plan and carry out experiments independently and to analyze the results. Due to high safety requirements, detailed experimental instructions are provided.

In order to make students more familiar with the safety aspects and to offer them the opportunity to perform experiments creatively and independently in a "safe" environment, some elements of these practical course will be digitized in a realistic way. By this, sources of error can be identified in the “safe” digital environment and failures can be analyzed. The students should be able to decide how to proceed in a given situation, which apparatus is required and how the task is performed in a successful manner.

After completing the digital laboratory, the students are trained in handling the devices and are familiar with the processes. They can safely set up the apparatus in the real laboratory and carry out the experiment successfully. They are able to recognize possible sources of error, assess the situation and eliminate the identified sources of error before start performing the experiment.
