In STEM education especially in chemistry practical training is an integral part. Up to now a vast number of the practical courses follow the expository instruction style, which limits the amounts of learning objects addressable within the lab education. This can be overcome by implementing more research based or problem-oriented assignments into the laboratory work. The approach of turning a classical wet-lab experiment into a possible remote lab with a new pedagogical design to widen learning objectives and provided students a better preparation for Industry 4.0 is presented. Here the redesign of a process optimization practical is shown with the aim to incorporate new learning objectives like. While still in the development process a brief overview on the technical and pedagogical approach and an outlook to the planed learning and teaching evaluation is given. As working with cyber-physical system for the students should be part of the practical the hardware/software set-up, data acquisition, and safety measures are presented. in the end the system can be used locally as well as remotely, which will allow to use the practical for pedagogical studies on influence on the learning effectiveness and outcomes when using remote laboratories instead of in-house settings in the future.
